  • JP20H01340, Spatial and Social Mobilities in the Medieval and Early Modern Alpine Regions:Political, Religious, and Social Dynamics in Boundary Areas, This project attempted an integrated understanding of spatial and social mobility in the pre-modern Alpine region, that is, a boundary area with political, social, and religious multiculturality. It analysed the correlation of ‘capitals’ of mobility across various aspects of the relationship between political and spiritual cultures in those regions. As a result, it became clear that the following factors of Alpine societies had critical meanings: the network of small- and medium-sized towns as a capital of mobility; the strategic resourcefulness of Alpine areas because of their peripheral position in the Holy Roman Empire; the high value of network capital in the Alpine boundary areas; the cultural mobility due to the multilingual situation; and the high capital value of tough experiences and the collective memory of those experiences throughout the areas as a capital of social and spiritual mobility, although this factor could be ambiguous.
  • JP18K01022, Ideas of Civic Poor Relief and their Practical Forms in the German Cities in the Modern Era - Focusing on Tensions between Religion and Liberalism, With the rapid development of modernization, secularization, and urbanization in Germany during the “long 19th century” and the establishment of modern social programs by the government and citizens, either within or parallel to the traditional church poor relief, there was a shift in the spiritual grounding of those involved in social practice from a Christian love of one’s neighbor to a civic ethos of support for the socially vulnerable as public welfare. However, beyond the framework of nation-states social practice as a faith-based work of love continued to play a key role and held meaning in the global development and networking of modern social programs.
