JP20K01482, A Comparative Study of Socialist Regimes in Eastern Europe during the Cold War, In this project, a total of six researchers specialising in the countries of the former Eastern Europe examined the resilience of authoritarian regimes in the late socialism. Regarding that the "backlash" of democracy or the "resilience" of authoritarian regimes have been actively discussed since the mid-2010s, we have focused on the background of the persistence of non-democratic regimes in the region until 1989, not only in the narrow sense of politics, but also in the social and cultural sphere. Although the research period was extended by one year due to the pandemic, which prevented field research at times, we believe that we were able to achieve a good number of research results.

JP20H00003, Transformations of the Secular and Reconfigurations of "the Religious" in the West: Interdisciplinary and Comparative Research, This research clarified various aspects of the Western reorganization of the “secular” and the “religious” from the following three perspectives. (1) The reconfiguration of “religious traditions,” especially in the Catholic cultural sphere. (2) The way in which Muslims, who have been “marginalized” in the West, have become entrenched in Western society, while facing to conflicts with their society. (3) Analysis of the ways in which religion and secularity are being reorganized, taking into account the growing number of non-religious people in Western societies.;In this research, we have examined the historical development of the “secular” period. We have not taken the concept of “religion” in the “secular” era as self-evident, but rather, we have specifically depicted various aspects of the relationship between the “religious” and the “secular” in the “post-secular” era based on various examples from the Western world.
18H00730, A Socio-Historical Analysis of Catholicism in Modern Europe: Continuity and Change, This research project examined the religious practices of Catholics in modern Europe by paying close attention to the everyday private lives defined by their religious mindset and their worldview. Our research group came to the following two conclusions.;First, the religiosity of Catholics was deeply rooted in their everyday practices, such as rites and rituals. Despite ongoing secularization, this religiosity was unchanged. Second, though Catholic organizations, groups, tenets, and norms supported people both materially and spiritually, they also fettered individuals in their private lives and pursuits.
17K02228, Religious Education as a Factor of Political and Social Changes under Communist Regime in Poland, In this research, I mainly examined theoretically how we can interpret the political participation of the Catholic Church in Poland with reference to the theories of Public Religions and the latest research into the populist parties. Based on this, I analyzed the character of the relationship between the State and the Church in the Catholic sphere, in contrast to ones in the Protestant sphere. Besides, the main achievements of my research during this period are:;1) I explained the transition of religious education in Poland through the 20th century and how it affects contemporary society, with reference to historical materials, precedents and legal texts.;2)I analyzed the impact of the Second Vatican Council on Polish society, mainly in the context of their reconciliation with Germany, and the one with Jewish citizens in Poland. The influence of the Council had spread neither rapidly nor directly, and was accepted according to the local context of each country.
26284117, A Social History of Catholicism in Modern European Society, This research project explored what role Catholicism played in the formation and the development of modern European society. Our research group came to the following three conclusions.;First, Catholicism, as it continued to be expressed through everyday life and culture, maintained a certain amount of social influence even as Europe was experiencing secularization from the turn into the nineteenth century onwards. Second, though there were differences depending on era and region, Catholicism’s influence was far-ranging, encompassing areas such as education, labor, politics, and welfare. Third, though it rejected many of the basic principles of modern society, Catholicism embraced some of them and hence became one of the driving forces in the formation of modern European society.
25870724, The relationship between the Catholic Church and the State in Poland in the 1970s, A lot of research shows that the Catholic Church has struggled against the Communist Party and played an essential role in the process of democratization under the Socialist regime of Poland. Nevertheless, I focus on the following Church functions: negotiations; striving for consensus, and trying to reach compromise with the Party.;The main achievement of my research during this period is published under the title, "Homilies of Pope John Paul II: His First Pilgrimage to the Homeland in 1979", which examined the process of diplomatic negotiation between the Polish episcopal conference and the Party in order to realize the pilgrimage, and its preparation of all programs in cooperation with the central and local government. Finally, I concluded that this historical event created a channel between the bishops and higher officials, priests and local administrators, the archdiocese of Warsaw and the provincial counterparts, clergymen and ordinary people, who are almost secularized.
