  • 93, 5, 447, 457, 2022, The “inability to switch off from work” — thinking about work during personal lives — is one of the barriers to work-life balance. However, there is a lack of empirical research on the factors, and effective ways to support work-life balance have not been clarified because there is no scale to measure it. This study’s purpose is to develop the “Inability to Switch off from Work Scale.” We conducted a cross-sectional survey and obtained data from 416 full-time employees. The results of factor analysis indicated a three-factor structure consisting of “emotional recall” (α = .89), “work ability pessimism” (α = .94), and “problem solving” (α = .90). There were significant correlations with mental health problems and related concepts: psychological detachment and repetitive negative thinking. The partial correlation with mental health problems was observed even when related concepts were controlled. Furthermore, the results supported the hypothesis about the mediation effects of the “inability to switch off,” between workload and mental health problems. In general, the results support the reliability and construct validity of the new scale.
  • A qualitative research on how workers go through ‘inability to switch off’: From the perspective of repetitive thinking, UCHIMURA Yasushi, Japanese Association of Industrial/Organizational Psychology Journal, 34, 1, 3, 17, 2020, Japanese Association of Industrial/Organizational Psychology, ‘Inability to switch off’, repetitive thinking about work, is considered to hinder work-life balance. The purpose of this qualitative research is to explore the construction and causes of ‘inability to switch off’. In this study, eighteen regular employees who engage in full-time work were interviewed. The data were analyzed based on grounded theory approach. The result shows that employees have their own ‘personal time’, when they want to switch off from work. It is also revealed that the employees feel psychological pain when they are stuck with recurrent thought about their work in their ‘personal time’. Based on these results, it is clarified that there are four forms of ‘inability to switch off’:‘affective intrusion’, ‘worrying about their work’, ‘being discouraged with themselves’ and ‘problem-solving pondering accompanied with pain’. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that each form has different patterns of relationships to the employees’ work environment, their cognitions, their behaviors and the degree of their personal life’s fulfillment. Although the generalizability of these results needs to be verified, this research is important because it reconstructs the concept of ‘inability to switch off’ and suggests the clues about how to prevent this inability, through closely examining working environment and individual cognitive and behavioral processes.
  • Examination of the Role of Abundant Non-Verbal Communication and of Low Level of Face-to-Face Contact in Psychological Support Using Avatar Communication, Saegusa Hiroyuki;Uchimura Yasushi;Tanikawa Tomohiro;Shimoyama Haruhiko, The Japanese Journal of Personality, 30, 3, 174, 185, 28 Feb. 2022, Japan Society of Personality Psychology,

In this study, we conducted comparative experiments to examine the role of online psychological support using avatar communication with abundant nonverbal communication and less face-to-face contact. Most participants in the experiments were students. In experiment one, twenty-two participants experienced and examined two types of psychological interviews: one with an animated avatar and another with a non-animated avatar. The mean value was analyzed using a paired t-test. The results indicated the effectiveness of psychological support using avatar communication and abundant nonverbal communication with a psychologist. In experiment two, twenty-four participants experienced and examined two types of psychological interviews: one with an avatar and another with real-person video communication. The mean value was analyzed using a paired t-test. The results highlight the effectiveness of psychological support using avatar communication despite less face-to-face contact with a psychologist. These experiments suggest the applicability of avatar communication in online psychological support.

  • 62, 537, 645, 30 Mar. 2023, To realize work-life balance, how to support “inability to switch off from work” has become an important issue. However, the factors that cause the inability have not been sufficiently examined. Recently, self-care, based on self-monitoring, has been gaining attention as a way to support employees’ mental health. On the other hand, it has been suggested that self-monitoring does not function effectively for Japanese people, because they tend to suppress problems even when they are aware of the problems. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the inability and self-monitoring to explore the direction of self-care for the inability. After a pre-survey to examine the questionnaire items, the present survey was conducted. Data from 115 shift-working women were used for analysis. The analysis revealed a high correlation between the inability and tendency for self-monitoring ( r = .65, p < .01, 95% CI[.53-.74]), and self-monitoring was not effective in reducing the inability even when coping behavior was used as an adjustment variable. The results indicate that self-monitoring is not effective in reducing the inability.
