  • Social functions of Yokai, considering Amabie as an example, during the COVID-19 calamity, Takahashi Ayako; Fujii Shuhei, The Japanese journal of psychology, 93, 1, 58, 64, Apr. 2022, The Japanese Psychological Association, The purposes of this study are to clarify the relationship between attitudes toward Amabie (folkloric mermaid -like creature) during the COVID-19 calamity and traditional values, including everyday religious activities in Japan, and to explore the social functions of Yokai (Japanese supernatural creature and phenomena). Although Yokai have historically had both religious and entertainment roles, recent studies have shown that contemporary Yokai are only seen as entertainment. In Japan, however, Amabie has been attracting public attention for its historic ability to repulse plagues and therefore seems to have social functions other than entertainment. Study 1 used newspaper articles and other supporting materials to investigate the social prevalence of Amabie and the way people relate to it. Study 2 investigated attitudes towards Amabie and traditional values. The results suggested that with the expectations that Amabie could drive the plague off, Amabie evoked not only positive but also negative impressions, and for that reason, it might be accepted as a Yokai. This showed that the function of Yokai may change depending on the situation.

  • The History and Current State of Japanese Zen Buddhism in Europe, 修平 藤井, Journal of Religion in Japan, 10, 2-3, 195, 221, 14 Jul. 2021, Brill, This paper will shed light upon the history and current state of Japanese Zen Buddhism in Europe. Japanese Zen has mainly been transmitted in two ways among European countries: via the group founded by Deshimaru Taisen, and through Christian Zen. Deshimaru went to Europe and taught Zen. His teaching represented Zen as a wholistic, scientific, and peaceful Eastern religion. Though his group initially expanded greatly, it split into several subgroups following Deshimaru’s death. On the other hand, Sanbō Kyōdan promoted ecumenical integration between Christianity and Zen. The longstanding interest in Zen among Christians can be seen in the contemporary “spiritual exchange of the East-West.” Concerning the current state of Zen in Europe, data show that there are more than 270 Zen centers in Europe, located in 24 countries. An analysis of the contemporary situation thus demonstrates that European Zen is mobile, has various forms, and has influenced Japanese institutions.
  • What the Emergence of CSR Brought About?, Shuhei Fujii, Method & Theory in the Study of Religion, 33, 1, 21, 42, Jan. 2021, Brill, The cognitive science of religion (CSR) is distinctive in its systematic methodology and its interdisciplinary nature. In the field of the study of religion, however, scholars are hardly receptive to CSR because of its “scientific” nature. The reason for this is that CSR is understood as distinct from other studies, nevertheless it has humanistic backgrounds. In order to investigate the intellectual backgrounds of CSR, the paper will describe the initial development of CSR by introducing researches and academic cooperation in the period from the 1990s to the early 2000s. Moreover, by examining academic contexts, what the emergence of CSR brought about to the study of religion will be clarified. CSR emerged as a result of the debate between modernist and postmodernist, connecting various views and resulting in a great shift in the intellectual landscape. This interdisciplinary role can be seen as the most important achievement of CSR.
