18K18547, A Comprehensive Survey of the Post-Disaster Society, Under the name of "Post-Disaster Society", we studied how Japanese and Japanese society have responded to the East Japan Earthquake from the perspectives of cultural anthropology, sociology, religious studies, and architecture; We realized especially the intensive field surveys in Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures to understand the changes in the local community after the earthquake, the changes in the religious practices, how the Fukushima nuclear accident evacuees lived, and how the supporters and student supporters acted.;Regarding the findings obtained from these surveys, we made several presentations at academic conferences and published some articles in the academic journals. We also published two books in order to widely disseminate the results of our researches to society.
18H00612, A New Turn of the Study on Japanese Religion: Approach to Locality with Global Perspective, A comparative perspective with the researcher's research history and the ease of rapport with informants were found in researching the religious history of the region of origin. The interaction between the interest fostered by the religious situation in the home region and a comparative perspective was confirmed. Regarding trends in local academic societies, research accumulation that considers the characteristics of regional religiosity was observed. The significance of local societies as regional platforms for maintaining interest in religious studies and religious history was confirmed.
26370068, Survey research on the change of local communities and public interest of religion after the Great East Japan Earthquake, In this study, we have investigated religious denominations, religious person and disaster recovery events after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The major findings of the study are summarized as follows. (1)We understood how religious-based ongoing support in the disaster-struck areas impacts on the discussion about public interest of religion. (2)We took a inventory survey of earthquake monuments in Iwaki and compiled a list of them. (3)We organized the involvement research conducted with citizens and presented the results at a conference of JARS and an open symposium given by us.
26244004, Action Research for Regional Disaster Prevention with Religious Facilities as Community Resources, We investigated how religious facilities and municipalities cooperate during disasters, engaged in action research regarding the creation of religious facility and local community social capital based on disaster prevention efforts, and constructed a local disaster prevention platform that incorporates religious facilities. In concrete terms, we quantitatively and qualitatively surveyed how municipalities and religious facilities across Japan cooperate with regard to disaster prevention and developed a disaster relief map application that can be used on smartphones. Using this application as a tool, we engaged in action research on disaster prevention efforts in Osaka, Tokyo, and elsewhere in which religious facilities, municipalities, and citizens’ groups cooperate, and constructed a local disaster prevention program and platform based on the results of our research that incorporates religious facilities.
25282119, Action Research for Community Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, We conducted a series of fieldwork in three communities - Noda Village, Iwate Prefecture, Minamisanriku Town and Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, devastatingly damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and provided a disaster-recovery education program based on our "Community Recovery Platform". We focused on various local organizations/associations including non-profit organizations, schools, and religious institutions in each community and conducted long-term collaborative practices with local residents related to those organizations. While these practices changed into action research, we appointed Noda Village as our principal area for the platform. Finally, we focused on a local association preparing for community FM radio station as our Community Recovery Platform, and implemented a trial educational program for community recovery collaborated with local schools.
23330159, International Comparative Study on Testimony, In this study, we have defined the testimony model comprising five steps, preparedsixteen types of testimonies containing different experience factors, showed one to each of our survey respondents, and asked each respondent if the testimony seemed acceptable to him or her. We performed thismail survey in Japan and Internet Survey in the United States through a research company panel.;The significant results are that testimony containing ethical belief is easily accepted but containing super natural belief is hardly accepted, and that testimony with rhetoric is easily accepted but without rhetoric is hardly accepted. And any socio-democratic factors do not influence on acceptance.
20320015, The Typology and Acceptability of Modern Religiosity : Databasing and Monitoring Study of Testimonies, A survey of almost 1400 people in the U.S. and Japan was carried out amongst religious believers and non-believers. They were asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed with one hundred concepts concerning religion; more than non-believers, believers agreed with ninety of these concepts. There were some unexpected and remarkable common points : the "Vitalistic Salvation" was believed in both countries ; and deviations of belief from authentic dogmas were also found. Furthermore, we found a common structure consisting of six groups of concepts : 1. faith in a personal god ; 2. religious norms ; 3. action to transcendence ; 4. a great life, and the soul ; 5. this-worldly benefit ; and 6. control of emotions. The groups are integrated into two meta-factors : practical/exoteric and ontological/esoteric. It is the practical/exoteric meta-factor only that affects happiness.
19330101, Comparative Culture and Sociological Studies of Socially Engaged Religions, We have conducted survey and field work of Socially Engaged Religions in Japan and overseas from the perspectives of Comparative religious and sociological studies, and then explained that such religious activities and institutions cultivates the sense of symbiosis, generosity, reciprocity, and public nature. Our efforts results in the publication, Keishi Inaba and Yoshihide Sakurai eds., Socially Engaged Religions,Sekaishisosha, 2009 and other papers and presentations in academic as well as public sphere. Consequently, this theme has been accepted in the sociology of religion in Japan.
17330115, The Construction and the Use of Discourse Database as Social Research Method : as Case Study on Religious Consciousness, In this research project, we studied the data collection and analysis method of social consciousness, using the database that has been hardly used in the humanities and social sciences. We research mainly religious consciousness as an example. The main results are as follows.;1. We constructed database by collecting the discourse concerning religion from religious order's pages, individual pages, and religious researcher's pages and so on. This database was published as Archive for religious information (ARI).;2. Contents of the web site were downloaded from ARI, and the edited data was analyzed by the text mining. It was understood that Buddhist sites were divided into the two. One kind of sites was nothing but the introduction of the temple and the teachings, and the others were sites that had contents rooted in daily life. From that we showed a classification different from a religious classification of the past.;3. In the internet survey data that had been done in 2006, we used two methods of the data collection. Respondents answered the open-ended questions and closed-ended questions, after reading presented sentences. The data from open-ended questions were analyzed by text mining and the closed-ended questions were done by quantitative data analysis. The results were that the communications gap in the religion, there were a problem at the level of the word and at the level of consciousness, and it was clarified that both had the interaction effect on religious tolerance.;4. We made 12 groups of ten people under two themes, and they were talking in the group on the internet, then transcript data was collected in 2007.;As mentioned above, it has been understood that our methods are effective as the collection and the analysis method in social research.
23320018, A General Study of Materials Used in Religious Culture Education, Our research has found that using online teaching materials can be extremely effective for carrying out religious culture education. The materials that were produced over the course of our research have been made available through our website. They include commentaries on the basic texts used in religious culture education, a database of world heritage properties associated with religious culture, a database related to film and religious culture, and a database of museums in Japan that are particularly useful for religious culture education.;Discussions at forums with an international framework and at study meetings attended by scholars from many Japanese universities have also made it clear that religious culture education has become an important issue in the context of ongoing globalization. Various initiatives are being undertaken grounded in the religious cultures of the countries concerned.
20242002, Construction of a Quality-Assuring System for Higher Education about Religious Culture, This research project aimed to establish a quality-assuring system for higher education in the field of religious studies (the term "education about religious culture" has been coined to name religious studies-based education as distinguished from theology-based education). In particular, it planned, on the one hand, to develop an inter-college evaluation system ("shukyo-bunkashi" system) based upon provisional, subject benchmark standards. On the other hand, it attempted to build a clearinghouse for college teachers in religious studies programs, which provides them with practical teaching methods and materials.;The project was carried out by seven working groups, each of which was comprised of the leading members of religious studies programs from more than twenty universities, including both national and private. Its major achievements are : a fact-finding survey of education about religious culture in undergraduate curricula ; needs analyses focusing on students' and corporate expectations for a "shukyo-bunkashi", a qualified specialist in religious culture; the foundation of the inter-college evaluation system of "shukyo-bunkashi" ; the launching of an on-line clearinghouse for teaching materials.;In order to make the results publicly accessible, the project has issued quarterly newsletters as well as held several international symposia, lectures and workshops.

11410009, BASIC STUDY OF THE HIGHLY INFORMED SOCIETY AND RELIGION, This project has done with the object of grasping the infruence of the highly informed society to the religion. And we investigated how the religious organizations correspond to the advancing process. We also researched the pre-history of the highly informed society. That is the trelationship of the Japanese religiosity and radio, television. The Japanese religiosity got more and more lower. On the other side religious programs are increasing. In highly informed society we can see many religous homepages on the internet. Most of the religiou organizations are concerned to make their homepages; We cleared the present state of religious homepages and some matters which annoyed the religious organizations. Religous organizations which opened homepages don't afford to get many believers. Netcontacters who are generally young are not likely to contact with religious sites; We more need to understand the religiosity in the highlyinformed society to compre hend the relationship man and society

JP18H00615, Comprehensive Research for the International Platform Development of Japanese Religious Education, We conducted research and investigation on the teachings and materials of Shinto, Buddhism, and Christianity as religions in Japan, involving both Japanese and foreign scholars. Although there were limitations to the planned research exchanges and investigations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to collaborate with overseas universities online and develop religious cultur education utilizing multimedia, such as creating videos. Furthermore, through information exchanges with photographers, we were able to explore techniques for creating teaching materials and conducting research through photography, leading to unexpected research outcomes.
