A Case of FD Programs at Kokugakuin Univ. from Trends analysis of FD-related Papers, 第10号, 27, 43, 31 Mar. 2019, 戸村 理, Not a few institutions have medium and long-term issues as well as short-term ones under the current circumstance where the efforts for the faculty development (FD) have been widely spread. Kokugakuin University is facing various challenges as well. In this context, this paper has made two discussions for the purpose of examining how the future FD of Kokugakuin Univ. has to be. One is the discussion on the trends of FD in Japan over the past 30 years or so while the other is that for understanding the current status based on the summarizations and analyses of FD which Kokugakuin Univ. has been addressing so far. The former discussion has reviewed FD-related study papers in academic journals in terms of their quantity and contents, revealing that there was a change in the contents of such FD-related study papers around the time when the efforts for FD was obligated in 1997. Meanwhile, the latter discussion marshaled past FD practices by classifying them into three types and then analyzed them from the perspectives obtained through the first discussion, consequently reaching a view that they had a tendency to be biased toward the resolution of practical challenges according to the political/practical framework. Taken all together, this paper, based on the recognition that the current FD of Kokugakuin Univ. is at the transition stage for seeking a new stage, concluded that it is at the stage where the FD seeking to satisfy both the principles and practical natures of the university and its education should be substantialized based on the academic perspective as well as the autonomy and initiatives of its faculties.

Significance and Potential of "Teacher Assistance" by SA, from the Viewpoint of "Improvement of Sociality of Students": An Analysis of the Student Assistant System at Kokugakuin University, The Bulletin of Institute for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, 第8号, 1, 31, 01 Mar. 2017, KOKUGAKUIN UNIVERSITY Institute for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, 新井大祐,中條豊, The Student Assistant System (SA) was introduced to the educational structure at Kokugakuin University in 2009. Whereas in other universities, student staff often participate in activities helping faculty staff improve the quality of education and providing peer-support in learning, the system at Kokugakuin University has been limited to the provision of assistance for teachers in large-scale classes. The "SA" system has been adopted across Japanese universities after the release of "Hironaka Report" in which student-orientedness through their increasing participation, responsibility, independence and sociality was emphasized.
Having this as a background, there is a sceptical view that the “SA” system being “faculty assistance” in which the students basically deal with chores in class, as oppose to the roles in assisting FD or providing peer-support, is not adding valuable skill-set to the students.
In this paper, significance of the system at Kokugakuin University is discussed. It first explores the history of the system. Subsequently, the opinions on the influence of the system collected from both the students and teachers will be analyzed. The results demonstrate growing initiatives, responsibilities, sense of belonging, and reflective skills which can be potentially applied to a variety of situations both within and beyond one’s campus life.
