A Social History of the Public Museum and People with Disabilities in Japan: A Case Study of the Mona Lisa Special Exhibition in 1974, Shunsuke ITOH, The Journal of the Museological Society of Japan, 47, 2, pp.15, 47, 30 Apr. 2022, The Museological Society of Japan, On April 20, 1974, at the Mona Lisa special exhibition held at the Tokyo National Museum, a women with disabilities sprayed the case in which the Mona Lisa was displayed. This is the so-called “Mona Lisa Spray Incident”.
The incident began when the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the parent governmental organization of the National Museums, announced a ban on admission to the special exhibition for “Family with Preschoolers and Disabled Persons who need assistance” them to prevent accidents due to crowding. This policy was the center of the critical attention through women and disability groups, mass media. Therefore, the Agency set a “Special Day for Disabled Persons” and tried to resolve the problem by offering free admission, but the next policy for people with disabilities was regarded as a problem in regards to they could only admission for one day. The incident was a performance to protest such discrimination against people with disabilities.
From the details of the incident revealed that the museum side and people with disabilities side responded between the social relationships of exclusion and inclusion. However, when social engagement of people with disabilities was not promoted in the 1970s, the implementation of special day for them opened the way for accessibilities in the public museums in post-war Japan. At the same time, I considered to be an important event in the history of Japanese museums in that the incident visualized the core of the problem and caused social debate over the position of the audiences.
