CHALLENGES IN CONTINUING TO PROVIDE CHILDCARE IN AN ACCREDITED CERTIFIED CHILD CENTER AFTER A DISASTER -A CASE STUDY OF AN ACCREDITED CERTIFIED CHILD CENTER IN TORIDE CITY, IBARAKI PREFECTURE, JAPAN, DAMAGED BY HEAVY RAINFALL CAUSED BY A RAIN FRONT AND TYPHOON NO. 2 IN 2023―, NISHIMURA Miho; NAKANO Susumu, Japanese Journal of JSCE, 80, 24, n/a, 2024, Japan Society of Civil Engineers, The purpose of this study is to summarize the points to be considered when formulating a child-care continuity plan for certified child-care centers, using a certified child center in Toride City, Ibaraki Prefecture, which was damaged by a heavy rain caused by a rainy front and Typhoon No. 2 in 2023, as a case study. Interviews were conducted with the affected certified child center, the local government division in charge of childcare, and three kindergarten and daycare centers that had accepted the children. The affected preschools had secured alternative facilities and dispersed their childcare services among the three locations. When childcare was resumed, priority was given to children with high childcare needs, and even within the same certified child center, some children were able to resume attending certified child center early while others were not, depending on the working status of their parents. In addition, securing an alternative facility to accommodate many children is an issue, and a cooperative system within the community is needed to enable the acceptance of children.

Evacuation and Disaster Response Issues of Childcare Facilities Affected by the Heavy Rain Disaster in Northern Kyushu, Nishimura Miho; Nakano Susumu, Journal of Japan Society for Natural Disaster Science, 42, 特別号, 59, 74, 2023, Japan Society for Natural Disaster Science, The purpose of this paper is to clarify the issues involved in the resumption of childcare
services and the evacuation and handover of childcare facilities at nursery schools, kindergartens
and certified children centers damaged by the heavy rain in August 2019, the heavy rain in July
2020, and the heavy rain in August 2021. Regarding the reopening of childcare facilities, it was
confirmed that there were problems with facilities and equipment, such as securing a safe and
sanitary environment and space for childcare facilities during repair work, providing school
lunches, and providing childcare at alternative facilities. Regarding evacuation and handover,
issues related to (1) lack of information gathering means, (2) preparing for a prolonged
evacuation, (3) ensuring the safety of parents and staff were found, and (4) communication
between childcare facilities and parents.
EVACUATION BEHAVIOR AND CHILDCARE CONTINUITY AT A NURSERY SCHOOL IN AJIGASAWA TOWN, AOMORI PREFECUTURE DUE TO HEAVY RAIN FROM AUGUST 9, 2022, NAKANO Susumu; NISHIMURA Miho, Japanese Journal of JSCE, 79, 24, 23-24008, 2023, Japan Society of Civil Engineers, Due to the heavy rain from August 9, 2022, the Nakamura River, which flows through Ajigasawa Town, Aomori Prefecture, overflowed, causing flood damage exceeding 1 m. A nursery school was flooded up to 0.75m above the floor, and 47 children evacuated to a nearby elementary school by bus and on foot. Evacuation was carried out for about 30 minutes from 11:00 immediately after the evacuation order was issued. Even on the day of the disaster, an alternative nursery school was considered, and after the emergency nursery school, the nursery school was continued using the public hall. Based on interviews at the nursery school, we sorted out the problems of evacuation behavior and childcare continuity. In addition, after reproducing the progress of the flood in the urban area based on the flood trace survey around the nursery school and the flood inundation analysis of the Nakamura River, it was verified whether the evacuation route and evacuation behavior were appropriate.

Utilization and issues of baby liquid formula in Japan, Mizuno Tomomi; Nishimura Miho; Tokuda Katsumi, Journal for the Integrated Study of Dietary Habits, 31, 3, 177, 186, 2020, THE JAPAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE INTEGRATED STUDY OF DIETARY HABITS, The purpose of this study was to determine whether baby liquid formula is effective in reducing the burden of childcare for mothers and to clarify what challenges parents need to face in order to feel comfortable using it if it helps to reduce the burden of childcare. The study consisted of a paper survey of questions for mothers raising their infants (Study 1) and a baby liquid formula tasting survey for infants (Study 2).
Study 1 used a question paper-based survey of mothers raising their infants and was clarified how they breastfeed and whether they feel that baby liquid formula products are effective in reducing the burden of childcare.
In Study 2, mothers raising their infants were asked to sample baby liquid formula by their children to determine whether their infants were able to drink baby liquid formula and how they felt it would affect their ability to reduce the burden of childcare by giving them baby liquid formula. The results of this study showed that mothers who had given their children baby liquid formula felt that baby liquid formula helped to reduce the burden of childcare. Moreover, some people say they feel safer if they have it at home as an emergency stockpile, making it a highly valuable item in Japan, where natural disasters are frequent.
However, the problems were found that the high price, the inability to give it directly to children, and the lack of options.
In addition, a certain number of children cannot drink baby liquid formula, or cannot drink it unless it is warmed up, so families considering stockpiling it for disasters indicated the need to test whether their children can drink baby liquid formula or not.
Furthermore, it was inferred that some parents may be hesitant to use artificial milk, including baby liquid formula, due to the belief in breast milk. The one-sided opinion that "babies should be breast-fed” must be corrected, and we need to change our society to one where we can use artificial milk safely.

Suggestion of living environment where children with developmental disabilities can live safely and comfortably:from the perspective of preventing domestic accidents and secondary disabilities, Tokuda Katsumi; Mizuno Tomomi; Nishidate Arisa; Nishimura Miho, JOURNAL OF THE HOUSING RESEARCH FOUNDATION "JUSOKEN", 44, 0, 61, 71, 2018, Housing Research Foundation "JUSOKEN", This research clarified what kind of places at home and inside of kindergartens and daycare centers the children with tendency of developmental disabilities have accidents and injuries. As a result, there are many cases where children with developmental disabilities fall from stairs and furniture, and bump their head into furniture. Parents and nursery teachers take measures such as install a fence on the stairs and put an auxiliary lock on the window. At home, many families take measures after children get injured but at many daycare centers, visual assistance, such as picture cards, is used to warn children not to behave dangerously.

The Way the Medical Scene is Described in Picture Books, 西村 実穂; 北野 雅, ライフデザイン学研究, 9, 9, 319, 332, 2013, 東洋大学ライフデザイン学部, The present study aimed to grasp the way the medical scene is described in picture books that are published in Japan currently. Subject of this research is 63 books selected from International Library of Children's Literature database. Many of the books that were analyzed in this research describe that treatment will cure the sickness so children can learn the meaning of treatment and what to do when they get sick from the picture books. However, it is not sufficient to know about the actual medical scene by reading picture books because many medical scenes in picture books are distorted, many describes home visit which is rarely performed, and the job type for the medical staff is biased. If the picture books are used to learn about the actual examination or to reduce the stress, picture books that have the examination scene should be selected or adults who read the books should supplement more explanation.

Child Care Worker's awareness and the issues of kindergarten bus, 西村 実穂, ライフデザイン学研究, 8, 8, 223, 233, 2012, 東洋大学ライフデザイン学部, The objectives of this research is clarify what kind of problems teachers are aware of that are related to kindergarten buses, clarify whether there are problems related to children with special needs riding the bus, and organize the challenges related to kindergarten buses. To do this we used an anonymous questionnaire for kindergarten teachers.Teachers perceived that it is more of a problem that parents do not follow the rules for getting on the bus rather than the physical stress of children from riding the bus for a long time or difference in school time. For problems related to children with special needs, hyperactive children cannot sit still so teachers are apprehensive about any situation where they cannot ensure children's safety. Some teachers feel tense and stressed about attending the bus because they must handle such children in the bus. In order to lessen the stress of teachers and improve the safety of children, it is necessary to consider the installation of seatbelts and procedures on how to handle the troubles in buses that are related to children with special needs.
