Possibilities and Limits of Collaboration: An Analysis of John Curry and Twyla Tharp's Figure Skating Work After All, Tatsuki Machida, Journal of Comparative Literature, 66, 78, 93, 31 Mar. 2024, Japan Comparative Literature Association, “Collaboration” refers to the creation of a single work of art by multiple authors working together. Since the 1960s, when postmodernism began to take shape, collaborations between people from different genres and areas have been active in all fields, including literature, art, music, dance, and architecture. This study is a cross-genre discussion of collaboration as a method of artistic creation.
The 1970s and 1980s witnessed a significant extent of collaborations between the figure skating and dance worlds. The British figure skater John Curry led these collaborations. He created a total of 24 figure skating works with 15 dance choreographers. Particularly noteworthy is After All, created in collaboration with American dance choreographer Twyla Tharp. In this piece, Curry and Tharp attempted to create a completely new figure skating piece by combining their respective specialties in skating and dance styles. This study examines their collaboration by using their joint work After All as a case study.
First, the collaborative process between Curry and Tharp in producing After All is analyzed from the perspective of comparative cultural theory. Second, the content of the work is analyzed using the figure notation developed by the author to reveal how Curry and Tharp’s styles were integrated. By applying these methods, we evaluate After All and discuss the possibilities and limitations of collaboration.
A History of Cultural Interaction between Figure Skating and Dance: John Curry’s Collaborations in the 1970s and 1980s, Tatsuki Machida, Choreologia, 46, 11, 23, 23 Dec. 2023, Japanese Society for Dance Research, British figure skater John Curry (1949-1994) was a driving force behind the fusion of figure skating and ballet in the 1970s and 1980s. He won the men’s figure skating gold medal in the 1972 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. In addition to ice skating, he was engaged in ballet since his youth, and appeared on stage as a dancer. Curry collaborated with many dance choreographers, leveraging his strengths as a dual-medium performer who advanced both the disciplines of figure skating and ballet. The purpose of this paper is to systematically organize the collaborative achievements as they are still ambiguous and describe it as a history of cultural interaction between figure skating and ballet.
Extensive archival research revealed that Curry collaborated with 15 choreographers on 24 figure skating performances between 1976 and 1984. These works were divided into the following groups according to their contents: (1) works created based on the style of classical ballet, (2) works that reflect the artistry of the choreographers, (3) adaptations of existing dance works, and (4) comparative experimental works that contain the same movements on the floor and on the ice. In addition, examining the creative processes and intentions of Curry and the choreographers in detail reveals that their collaborations aimed to expand the forms of classical ballet and postmodern dance, in addition to figure skating. Consequently, their collaborations can be evaluated as epoch-making efforts that connect the history of figure skating with the history of dance.
Olympic and Sport Archive: An Institutional Theory for Preservation and Inheritance of Sport Properties, Based on IOC's Global Governance System, Tatsuki Machida, KEIO SFC JOURNAL, 20, 1, 66, 87, 20 Sep. 2020, Keio SFC Academic Society, This paper considers a system to efficiently archive a wide variety of properties (documents, videos, databases, heritage, etc.) related to the Olympics and sport events. Specifically, following the four core elements of digital archiving mentioned in the guidelines of the National Information Standards Organization (USA), “Collection,” “Object,” “Metadata,” and “Initiative,” we examined methods for archiving properties related to the Olympics. Our results show that a globally standardized system of Olympic and sport archives can be built by utilizing the IOC’s Global Governance System and Transnational Law System.
The Applicability of Copyright Law Protection in Artistic Sports: Study of Judgment Standards Surrounding the Delimitation of Copyrightability for Choreographic Works, Tatsuki Machida, Journal of Intellectual Property Association of Japan, 16, 1, 73, 96, 01 Jun. 2019, Intellectual Property Association of Japan, This paper discusses an interpretive theory that pursues copyrightability in sports, which continues to be an obscure issue both inside and outside Japan. Sports that contain an expressive performance using body movements and motivated by music that are subject to evaluation are defined as “artistic sports.” This article explores the copyrightability of such artistic sports. the results clearly show that, as long as creativity under Copyright Law can be seen in the creation and performance of artistic sports, it can be legally protected by Copyright Law. Through this discourse, the author has also developed a new judgement standard (separability of “regulated moves” and “deregulated moves”) to ascertain the level of creativity in artistic sports. Applying this judgment standard will permit the theoretical deduction of copyright for sports of all kinds.

The Phenomena of Inter-Genre Transfer from Artistic Sports Products to the Cultural Art Market: An Analysis of Figure Skating Audience Consumption Behavior, Tatsuki Machida, Journal of Cultural Economics Japan, 15, 2, 20, 31, 01 Sep. 2018, Japan Association for Cultural Economics, This thesis is to analyze audience secondary arts consumption choices based on data from statistical surveys of figure skating event audiences. In this paper, we defined such consumption behavior as “inter-genre transfer,” which we then interpret with reference to the theories of “intertextuality” and the concept of“Cultural Capital.” As a result, we found that the artistic sports market has an overlapping relationship with the art market.
