Daijōsai and Kokugakuin University Collection, DAIKI KIMURA; TAKAAKI DAITO, Myth and Ritual in Ancient Japan, 20 Sep. 2018, 大東敬明, The Daijosai, believed to have become institutionalized in eras of Emperors Tenmu and Empress Jito (the Asuka Era, 7th century), saw few changes over the centuries; the fundamental forms and composition of the rituals were maintained through the late medieval times. Later, the ceremony came to a halt with the start of the Warring States Period. It was revived more than 220 years later in the eras of Emperor Higashiyama and Emperor Sakuramachi (the middle Edo Period, 17-18th century).
The documents used by officials at time as a basis for reviving the festival were Gishiki and Engishiki, written in the Heian Era (10th century). Both texts are very ancient records that broadly summarize the procedures and regulations of the Daijosai and are first-rate documents for understanding the festival. This study aims to provide the overall schedule focusing on flow of food (particularly rice), clothing, and dwelling for dedicating to the gods in the Daijosai from ancient times. In addition, the study attempts to demonstrate how these procedures have been recorded and portrayed in literature and drawings in sources, related to the Daijosai and archived by the university. The work of steadily and objectively buildings facts from these sources creates a foundation for both a theory of royality and a theory of ritual.
