JP22K20464, A Study on the Development Processes and Utilization of Publicly-Owned Historic Buildings in Preservation Districts in Japan, In traditional townscape preservation areas, municipalities sometimes acquire historic buildings that private owners cannot maintain. While such practices exist, their national scope had not been clarified. This study surveyed municipalities with Important Preservation Districts and priority areas under the Historic Townscape Act to understand their acquisition policies and practices.;From 82 municipalities, data on 260 facilities were collected. The study examined reasons for acquisition, legal or cultural grounds, costs for acquisition and renovation, and current uses; including user numbers and private-sector involvement.;Findings show that recent acquisitions often support broader urban development goals and contribute to city planning. However, challenges such as high administrative costs and the need for operational expertise were also identified.
