  • Endogenous timing in tax competition: The effect of asymmetric information, Takaaki Hamada, Journal of Public Economic Theory, 25, 3, 570, 614, Jun. 2023, Wiley, This study explores the effects of asymmetric information on endogenous leadership in a simple tax competition environment. The study models a two-country economy where one country is informed about its own and opponent's productivity of private goods, while the other country only knows its productivity. The results show that each type of informed country has an incentive to pretend to be the other type, which leads to a Stackelberg outcome endogenously, while the simultaneous move is the unique outcome under complete information. Under the Stackelberg outcome, the uninformed country moves first and the informed country moves second. Moreover, ex-post social welfare under asymmetric information can become larger than that under complete information, because the uninformed country chooses a less aggressive tax rate under asymmetric information. These results depend on the type of uncertainty, and capital ownership and share.
  • Aug. 2020, We investigate other regarding preferences when others are involved in some risks. We call such risks “risks on others (ROO).” We design a novel experiment to capture ROO, and also theoretically define risk attitudes toward others under two dimensions: an absolute term, which characterizes one’s risk attitudes toward others without comparing with other individuals, and a relative term, which compares these risk attitudes between individuals. From our experiment, we find that decision makers exhibit robust risk-averse behaviors, which contradicts the most representative linear inequality aversion models by Fehr and Schmidt (1999). Utilizing our experimental setting, which enables us to compare risk attitudes toward others between subjects, we also investigate the effect of sources of ROO on other regarding behaviors.
