JP16K18211, A Study on Historic Urban Conservation in an Evolving Society with a Focus on Acceptable Changes, Under the influence of rapid economic development and globalization, historic environment in Asian cities has gradually being impaired. For the purpose of contributing to establishing the practical methodology of historic urban conservation in Asia, this study examined existing relevant system and its implementation. As a result, it was revealed that each city and area has been utilizing different tools including regulations and projects for the conservation. Differences of how the society understand and put an importance on historic environment appears to be influential on the available system for the conservation. Further, under which institutional fields the conservation is operationalized is also different from each other. In addition, it was observed that each city and area has its own perspective regarding what aspect of the city or area is to be conserved. As a whole, this study concretely revealed a part of diverse approach to the historic urban conservation.
JP26420613, A Study on Urban Regeneration in Asian Large Cities: Focusing on Conservation of Social Tissues and Cultural Heritage, Recognizing that urban conservation in Asia requires the comprehensive perspective with the consideration on the roles of their social tissues as well as the significance of tangible and intangible heritage, the study took four historic areas in Asian cities; Taipei (Taiwan), Hanoi (Vietnam), Penang (Malaysia), and Bangkok (Thailand). The on-site survey at four cities including interviews and questionnaire survey gave the following findings in every city; 1) the clarification of local socio-economic transition, transition of social tissues, and the interrelationship between those two transition process, 2) the state of conservation of tangible and intangible heritage, 3) essential factors for establishing the urban conservation system that accommodates social tissues, and varied approach to those factors taken in each area.
JP24860052, The Study on the Multi-actor Partnership Building in Historic Urban Conservation Activities in Asian Large Cities, This study is on the process of historical urban conservation which involves local residents and community. Taking four historic districts in Asian large cities, namely Dadaocheng in Taipei, 36 guild streets in Hanoi, Yamate area in Yokohama, and George Town World Heritage Site in Penang, the followings were analyzed; the legal framework and projects/activities for historical environmental conservation, legal framework and project/activities where civic participation is secured, and the roles taken by stakeholders. The findings included the followings: the important factors for development of historic urban conservation; categories of important roles taken by the stakeholders; and the important factors for urban conservation process based on multi-actor partnerships are extracted. Finally, the importance of developing the civic participation and partnership scheme hand-in-hand with the status of citizens’ awareness is emphasized, referring to the experience of Yokohama.
