  • The situation of ECEC practices that allow teachers to be open: From the case of F Kindergarten, NISHIYAMA, Moe, 9, 23, 34, 30 Jun. 2021, In order to improve the expertise of ECEC teachers, it is necessary to not only consider their acquisition of knowledge and skills as an individual, but also the demonstration of such skills in an organization. In this study, we focused on team ECEC, in which all the teachers work together, and examined the kind of organization in which the expertise of teachers can be demonstrated. The method used entailed participant observation undertaken at F kindergarten. The results were as follows: First, from the analysis of the case study, it was thought that the teachers' demonstration of their expertise was the action "understanding" and "action" took place simultaneously. Next, as gleaned from the interview analysis, it was shown that team ECEC is practiced based on beliefs and systems. In addition, it became clear that the system is important for teachers to demonstrate their expertise. The system was to create a form of ECEC where children and teachers could mix, an open structure, and time for teachers to discuss with each other.

  • What does “Mutualism” Mean in Kurahashi Sozo’s Theory of Kindergarten Education?, Nishiyama Moe, Early Childhood Care and Education Research Journal, 62, 2, 31, 42, 2024, JAPAN SOCIETY of RESEARCH on EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE and EDUCATION, This study sought to clarify what “mutualism” means in Kurahashi Sozo’s theory of kindergarten education by analyzing Kurahashi’s writings published from 1914 to 1953. Kurahashi stated that one of the principles of kindergarten education is education that is centered on mutualism among children. Analysis of his writings revealed the following five concepts about mutualism: (1) Mutualism is necessary for children to satisfy their desire for friends; (2) Mutualism is defined in the context of equality and negotiation among children; (3) Education through mutualism respects the individuality that emerges in relationships; (4) Education through mutualism focuses on child’s spontaneous emotion; and (5) Humanity is cultivated through mutualism. This finding suggests that Kurahashi’s theory of mutualism is considered a pedagogy based on a relational perspective, distinct from the educational theories of Makiyama Eiji and Kido Mantaro, which aim to promote communality.

  • Analysis of the Interactions between Oldcomers and Newcomers in Kodomoen: A Case Study of a 3–year–old Children’s Class during the COVID–19 Pandemic, NISHIYAMA Moe, Japanese Journal of Qualitative Psychology, 20, Special, S235, S242, 2021, Japanese Association of Qualitative Psychology, This study aimed to understand the interactions between oldcomers and newcomers in the early stage of a class of 3–year–olds in kodomoen based on social relationships advocated by Lave and Wenger. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID–19) pandemic, we made new discoveries by observing and recording the interactions carefully between oldcomers and newcomers. The research objects were the documentations of children’s actions, which were analyzed as verbs. The results indicated that the act of caring was unique to oldcomers and newcomers, and the act of being cared for was frequently observed between 3–year–olds and those older. Additionally, on analyzing the acts of caring and being cared for, it was found that newcomers cared for others in situations related to things they were concerned about, while oldcomers cared for others according to their needs, just as 4–year and 5– year–olds do.
