• JP20K12777, An Ethical Study on Autonomy and Moral Coercion through the Examination of Substantive Conceptions and Kantian Practical Philosophy, This study was based on the fundamental questions: What is autonomy? and why is autonomy important? It examined these questions in relation to moral coercion. In particular, the research focused on substantive conceptions-a prominent perspective in contemporary theories of autonomy-and Kantian practical philosophy.;The key findings of this study can be summarized as follows: ①It identified more common features among different substantive conceptions than usually recognized. ②It clarified the problems of substantive conceptions and showed that Kantian practical philosophy serves as a valuable intellectual resource in addressing these challenges. ③It explored the role that substantive conceptions and Kantian autonomy can play in contemporary discussions on feminism, human rights, and tolerance.
• JP17K02186, Transformation of Kantian Transcendental Philosophy by Means of "Empirically Defeasible A Priori", The Transcendental Philosophy is an investigation of a priori structures of cognition, ethics, etc. It has been criticized for being unable to consider the essential historicity of human cognition and ethics. In consideration of this criticism, our research aimed at proposing a new framework of “Kantian” Transcendental Philosophy which can respect the historicity of our cognition and ethics. To this end, our research invoked the idea of “empirically defeasible a priori” which has been developed in the current analytic epistemology. Regarding epistemology, Chiba showed how some fundamental problems inherent to Kant’s theoretical philosophy can be solved with the aid of L. BonJour’s theory of a priori justification. Regarding ethics, Tahara explicated contemporary attempts to justify Kantian universal moral norms without assumption of independence from experience and sought possibilities of historically changeable moral judgement under Kantian moral law with a priority.

This research focused especially on the theme “the priority of the right over the good”. Based on Kant’s practical philosophy, this theme is interpreted to mean the priority of the morality over the happiness. It is the controversy which is emphasized by this research that Kant brings counterarguments against arguments for the priority of the happiness over the morality. This research clarified what kinds of the priority of the happiness over the morality Kant objects and how Kant aims to refute them.
