20300091, Information Semiotics Approach on TV analysis and Digital Critique Platform, This is a "Information Organization" study to conceive an ideal architecture for TV digital archives. For this purpose, was constructed a digital critique platform named "Critical PLATEAU" : a experimental IT based system which links the knowledge base on "semantic critique" to a TV broadcasting programs archive. This approach of "Information Semiotics" aims to integrate IT semiosis's epistemological moment to the sake of semantic analysis of media content. The project has three dimensions.;1 Theoretical research on "TV archives" based on Information Semiotics :;With adoption of theoretical framework of Foucault's "archeology of knowledge" for Information Semiotics, a theoretical new paradigm of "TV archives studies" was formulated which opens a "diachronic studies" perspective of TV semiotics.;2 Construction of a "Critical PLATEAU" platform for TV archive :;Was conceived and created a digital critique platform "Critical PLATEAU" composed of three "Critical Devices" : 1) a hypermedia encyclopedia "Tree of knowledge for TV analysis" ; 2) a digital annotating system "Lignes de Temps"(IRI Centre Pompidou) ; 3) a Topic Map system for sharing knowledge "Knowledge Concierge"(Hitachi Solutions).;3 Experiences on TV broadcasting programs archives :;Were made series of experiences on TV archives with utilization of the Critical PLATEAU. These studies were realized in collaboration with INA and NHK.
19201050, An Interdisciplinary Study on the US Cultural Diplomacy and Global Strategies, The primary objective of this research project was to gain a deeper, interdisciplinary understanding of the US cultural diplomacy during the Cold War era. Among the major findings of the 3-year project was a detailed examination of how the US State Department closely coordinated with private citizens and institutions, as well as corporate sector including the Hollywood film industry and airlines, in order to promote its cultural diplomacy in Japan and other areas in Asia. Special focus was placed, rather than on the narrowly defined political agenda, but on the intentions and actions of those directly involved in planning and implementing cultural diplomacy and the process of adjustment and counter-reactions that developed through such cultural contacts. As part of the project, a new analysis was made on the PR films the US government had made to celebrate the statehood of Alaska and Hawaii, both gaining their strategic importance for the US after World War II. In terms of the scope of the project, a historical study of the cultural hegemony over the Pacific region was thus an additional fruit of this research effort. Particularly the fieldwork in Saipan and the Republic of Palau has brought a powerfully fresh insight into the actualities of various cultural contacts ; how the multi-layered legacies of the Spanish, German, Japanese, and American occupations have left their indelible marks on the local cultures and identities. These postcolonial studies have contributed a longer historical perspective to the entire research project, bringing a more nuanced understanding of how cultural diplomacy may transcend its originally intended national interests and thereby shape new and diverse cultural forms and praxis in the long run.

17300080, Information Semiotics Approach on TV analysis and Hypermedia Encylopedia, This research project aims to systematize the knowledge of Information Semiotics by theoretical exploration on TV analysis and by construction of a hypermedia encyclopedia system named "The Tree of Knowledge for TV analysis".;This is a new type of approach to explore a semiotic process (Semiosis) taking place on the interface of human activities with computer processing process. Our research project consists of three divisions.;1 In theoretical division, we implemented a key-concepts network of Information Semiotics, in particular, of TV semiotics, on intranet of the Univ. of Tokyo, utilizing the knowledge management system " Chi no concierge " based on topic map technology. Nowadays this network can be accessed from any server of the Univ. of Tokyo.;2 In system development division, we finished all the design of the "Tree of Knowledge for TV analysis. And we developed in collaboration with IRI the Centre Pompidou in Paris a method for using the application Lignes de Temps, annotation tool for multimedia content, to analyze TV program.;3 We conceived a new approach to the Archive studies with the Tree of Knowledge, in collaboration with INA and NHK.
16330097, The Comparative Sociological Study on the Acceptance and Opposition for "America" in the Popular Culture in East Asian Cities in the Late 20th Century, First, we have clarified the multilayered effect of Americanism on the postwar Japanese Popular Culture in 1945-1969. The issue is how what is cut and lost in the process of multilayered changes in the post-war Japan has supported the post empirical order in Eastern Asia. In pursuing the analysis of this, we could connect the global military and political geopolitics to people's feelings and desires and the experience and meaning in daily life, not in the dualistic theory separating superstructure and substructure, micro and macro, text and context.;Second, in order to study the culture of American policy in East Asia, we made the digital archive system of the CIE films which was recently discovered in Kiryu City Library. We have had several research meetings on CIE Films.;Third, we have integrated the several digital archives administrated by variant universities which contain the materials concerning the theme, War and Media.
13410047, War and Media in the Twentieth Century Historical Sociological Studies of Information Culture in the Interwar Period, This project has pursued the study and analysis of war propaganda and media representation during the period from the Manchurian Incident to the Second World War. It involves cooperation among scholars from numerous fields of research, including sociology, history, media studies, art history, film history, design history, and photographic history. One of its main components is the production of a visual database based on the large collection of war propaganda material preserved at the Institute of Socio-information and Communication Studies. Much of the basic data entry work and translation of foreign language materials has now been completed. Surveys of other collections of propaganda material both in Japan and abroad have also been conducted, with a view to organizing a public exhibition on the theme of wartime propaganda. In future, we hope to build on the existing achievements of this project and incorporate the resulting database into a larger digital archive system.
12490014, Comparative Studies on Global Projects : Political Economy of Globalization and Global Culture, This research project's objective was to unravel and elucidate the mechanisms and apparatuses that produce global "trans-border" spaces, through its connection with studies on the political economy of globalization, and research related to global media and culture. By hosting multiple workshops and symposiums each year, this project not only fostered interactions between domestic researchers of various disciplines, but also laid the foundation for strengthening the intellectual network with foreign scholars. Over the last three years, this project attempted to erect "Globalization Studies" as a new research field, and in the process, reexamined the modern intellectual framework of the social sciences and humanities. This process involved investigating the mutation of the fundamental conceptualizations of the modern, as seen in the themes of equanimity, stability, rationality, peace, human rights, citizenship as well as surveillance, coercion, and violence. The fruits of this research project are presented in the following publications : T. Iyotani, What is Globalization? (Heibon-sha), and Iyotani ed., Globalization (Sakuhin-sha), Furthermore, the first volume of a Globalization Studies series, Y. Yamanouchi and N.Sakai eds., From Total War Mobilization to Globalization (Heibonsha) was recently published, and will be followed by T. Iyotani and S. Kang eds., The Political Economy of Globalization (working title), and S. Yoshimi and T. Morris-Suzuki eds., The Production and Consumption of Global Culture (working title) in the near future.
JP18H03646, The Pre-Post OlympicCity Tokyo: Comparative and Historical Sociology on Creative City, This research began with a challenge for the critical deconstruction of the creative city discourses, focusing on the Olympic City Tokyo and its central northern region, analyzing the aspects such as museums, parks, religion, youth, universities, and more. Aimed at a comparative analysis of the two years before and after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, an international symposium was also held online. However, due to the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, it bacame difficult to conduct field surveys in the city and holding face-to-face research meetings. The Tokyo Olympics, postponed by a year, resulted in exposing various difficult problems within Japanese society. In this research, young researchers conducted intensive analyses of the process of hosting the Olympics and media coverage. This analysis, along with a report, was compiled in the book edited by Shunya Yoshimi, "Pandemic and Olympics: Japan's Unchanging Chain of Failures" (Kawade Shobo Shinsha).
