18K10880, Effect of muscle activation and contraction type on respiratory muscle warm-up and training, This study performed in vivo measurements on respiratory muscles that can potentially alter intrathoracic volume and thereby assist with the mechanics of ventilation. We found that 1) the maximal inspiratory mouth pressure was affected by posture, 2) surface EMG electrodes placed on the intercostal space detect not only the activity of the intercostals, but also that of the oblique externus abdominis located above the intercostals, 3) surface EMG electrodes placed on the oblique externus abdominis detect not only the activity of the oblique externus abdominis, but also that of the underlying oblique internus abdominis, 4) EMG activity in the abdominal muscles during forced expiration tends to increase with increasing expiratory mouth pressure, but is lower than the activity during trunk flexion or rotation.
15K16500, Assessment of muscle condition based on muscle stiffness measured by ultrasound elastography, Ultrasound elastography is an imaging technique that can non-invasively measure tissue elasticity (tissue stiffness) in vivo. By using ultrasound elastography, this study measured tissue elasticity of skeletal muscle and aponeurosis in humans. We found that 1) muscle thickness of the rectus femoris was greater in athletes than non-athletes, but the muscle elasticity was not clearly different between them, 2) the maximum muscle elasticity of the biceps brachii was not observed on the day or later after the exercise that caused muscle damage, but observed immediately after the exercise, and 3) adequate ultrasound probe and imaging pre-set should be selected when measuring tissue elasticity of the plantar fascia.
24700695, Establishing a quantitative method for muscle hardness by using ultrasound elastography, and application of the method to assessment of muscle condition, Ultrasound elastography is an imaging method that measures tissue elasticity based on tissue displacement or elastic wave velocity that is induced by external force. The elastography is classified according to the type of the external force, and we used strain elastography and shear wave elastography. By using the strain elastography, we revealed the validity and reliability of a quantitative method for muscle hardness using two types of tissue mimicking materials, and showed the feasibility of concurrent measurement of muscle hardness and muscle architecture. By using the shear wave elastography, we investigated the relationship between muscle elasticity and thickness of adipose tissue or muscle and the relationship between muscle elasticity and joint flexibility.
23650386, Effect of candidate gene polymorphisms on the tendon extensibility related to sport performances, In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of injury-associated polymorphisms within these four genes on the mechanical properties of human tendon structures in vivo. One hundred Japanese males participated in this experiment. The mechanical properties of tendon structures in knee extensors and plantar flexors were measured using ultrasonography. All subjects were genotyped for COL1A1, COL5A1, GDF5, and MMP3 single nucleotide polymorphisms. For COL1A1, all subjects had GG genotype. For COL5A1, maximal tendon elongation and strain of individuals with a CC genotype were significantly greater than individuals with other genotypes (combined TT and CT) for knee extensors, but not for plantar flexors. For GDF5 and MMP3, there were no differences in the mechanical properties of tendon structures in knee extensors and plantar flexors among the three genotypes.
